Our latest trivia question, featuring Historica Canada, takes you on a tale of the human effigy at Ward Effigy Archaeological site.
East of Calgary, on a low knoll in a land so flat you can see for miles and miles, lies the figure of a human being. The figure faces south, barely visible from a distance, unlike the hill figures of England which were scraped into the chalky white hillsides.
The Ward Effigy is a stone outline of a man, his legs and torso clearly marked, that dates from the prehistoric era. A cluster of stones marks the heart and a group of three stones marks the penis and testes, signaling to all that this was a man. Who made him and why is a puzzling question. He is perhaps a precursor of the Blackfoot Napi diety, as enigmatic a symbol as the stone heads of Easter Island. Was he intended to scare off intruders, thinking that large people resided there? To attract help, signaling that other humans lived here? Was it a prank by some prehistoric teenagers?
The Effigy is as mysterious as the early people of lived here, who rolled some of the large glacial erratics into a human figure who remains to this day a signal that “we were here”.
